Boning Up

June 16, 2011

Very excited.  Got invited to sub in a bridge group tonight.  Hadn’t played since Peter was born.  This meant I had to get my Goren out.. had to go back and re-learn a whole bunch of bridge I’d forgotten in the intervening thirteen years.  A lot came back, and a lot didn’t, but it was extremely fun.  I’m going to have to figure out how to make this happen on a regular basis, I can tell.  Hmmm..

Here’s a practice hand I dealt myself.  I think I’d bid 1 heart and plan to jump on my next bid.

You?

I love playing cards, but serious bridge players are entirely too serious for me. I like the kind of card game where you can drink and laugh and not pay much attention to the actual game. 🙂

This was a very talky group that’s been playing together for 30+ years and I believe they use bridge as a vehicle for socializing. I found myself losing track of card count very easily.. not sure it was the conversation or my diminished brain. I like 1) playing the game seriously, 2) eating bridge mix, 3) drinking a glass of sherry (but of course), 4) talking *between* hands.

You, Bev, would probably know all of these women, they’ve been around Davis forever.

I was part of a bridge group once, but all but one has left town now. And it was more for the socializing than anything else. It’s been so long I wouldn’t remember how to play any more.
