January Late Afternoon Light

January 15, 2012

When you’re wearing casts on both legs, you sit a lot.  And when you’re having unseasonably sunny weather for January, you get nice light shining on your furniture.  So, with those two things in mind, here’s the view from the chair (this was yesterday, late afternoon).

Uh. Did I miss an entry? Why do you have casts on both legs? Just a couple of days ago you were hiking.

Well, it’s my two-year achilles tendon saga. After numerous courses of treatment with numerous physical therapists and no improvement whatsoever (and an upcoming trip to climb Kilimanjaro), I went to an orthopedic podiatrist last month who ordered **immobility**. I approached this casually (wearing one boot at a time and continuing to go about my usual routines, including walking a ton), and saw no improvement. So after a month he said to cast them both. He threatened hard casts on both for 6 weeks, and I countered with removable soft casts that I promised to leave on 24/7. I’m allowed to remove them, however, for showers and sleeping (and driving, but he was very reluctant on that one).

So, we’ll see. Also, we cancelled our trip to Kili for this year, as it will take more than 6 months to 1) fix these, 2) get them back to normal hiking function.
