Beat that, charming downtown coffee houses that serve expensive cafe au laits in durable glass vessels with ad-infused, corrugated cardboard sleeves.

Not that I don’t appreciate your (calculatedly) tasteful (yet appealing) ambiance, and savor your rich blends and baked goods, and breathe in (with such a smile) the Leonard Cohen that wafts over the clatter and hum of Davis’ young intellectuals and yoga moms.  Nothing finer than sitting in cafes, for sure..

..it’s just that I make a mean cuppa joe.

Here’s one now, in its favorite mug, in quiet surroundings, early on a Saturday morning.

  2. i don’t have an espresso maker (oh, wait, I do… but don’t use it). This is straight coffee. But. I heat the milk in the microwave (fill about one third to one half of the mug), then whip it w/ a battery operated hand frother:

    Then add coffee from a french press. Awesome, huh?

    (I love this frother — it was a gift and it’s been going strong for 7-8 years now — but I’ll bet there are better ones out there.)


  3. Thanks for all the info! I used to have a cheap little frother thing that is now dead. Guess I should invest in a better one. Your coffee looked like it was made in a coffee house! Are french presses difficult to use?


  4. FP is easy. scoop a couple TB of coursely ground good coffee into FP. add boiling water. stir it a little, put lid on and let it sit. After 5 mins, push FP lid (plunger) down, and pour yourself a great cup of coffee. (i pour the coffee into my hot frothed milk).

    takes 4 mins to boil water, 5 min to let coffee steep.

    OK…I saw the word “brew” in the title and got real excited but then sadly discovered you were talking about coffee and not the other foamy type brew of which I’m fond.
